Activision Blames World War II Setting For Low Call of Duty: Vanguard Sales

Call of Duty has remained the talk of the first-person shooting genre for over a decade now with sales continuing to make obscene amounts of money for parent company Activision Blizzard. However, fans of the franchise have been critical for the past few years with it all coming to their most recent installment Call of Duty: Vanguard.

In their latest annual report, the company admitted that the game did not reach the sales figures they had been expecting. While some feel the games have been rushed since a new title is released every year, Activision seem to think it is something entirely different. In the report, the company blamed the under performance on the game’s World War II setting along with a lack of innovation. Stating:

While Call of Duty remains one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time, our 2021 premium release didn’t meet our expectations, we believe primarily due to our own execution. The game’s World War II setting didn’t resonate with some of our community and we didn’t deliver as much innovation in the premium game as we would have liked. We are certainly addressing both of these issues with the 2022 launch.

The next installment in the franchise will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
