According to a study by Circana Retail Tracking Service, spending on physical video games in the United States has continued to shrink year-over-year. Since it’s peak in 2008, physical game sales has decreased by 85% and had been cut in half since 2021.
Several factors have been responsible for this including a weaker release schedule on the Nintendo Switch which has become a major factor in physical game sales. Other factors over past decades include the rise of microtransactions, online marketplaces, access to high-speed internet, and the rise of PC gaming.
