DDoS Attacker Sentenced To One-Year In Jail For Attacking World of Warcraft

The United States Department of Justice have released a statement revealing that Calin Mateias, a 38-year-old man from Romania, will be serving a one-year sentence in an US federal prison for several DDoS attacks on World of Warcraft back in 2010.

The agency said:

“Between February and September 2010, typically in connection with in-game disputes with other players, Mateias launched DDoS attacks on World of Warcraft servers in Europe. Mateias’ DDoS attacks caused World of Warcraft servers to crash and prevented some paying customers from accessing the game.”

For those wondering what took so long, the FBI indicted Mateias in 2011 but was only extradited to the United States last year. He’s been in custody since November 20, 2017. Mateias was also ordered to pay $30,000 to Blizzard and had charged dropped regarding a 2004 attempt to hack and rob Ingram Micro.
