Cuphead Developers Reveal They Mortgaged Their Houses And Quit Jobs To Make Game

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Cuphead’s Lead Designer and StudioMDHR Co-Founder Chad Moldenhauer revealed they made huge sacrifices to develop Cuphead. Even to go as far as to quit their jobs and mortgage their houses. Stating..

“My brother and I quit our jobs, remortgaged our houses and began expanding the team. This was our chance to actually deliver the game we wanted to make all along, rather than the cut-scope game we originally planned with a three-person team.”

The company has now grown to 20 employees and while everyone is well aware of the art style, gameplay and controls are still extremely important. Moldenhauer said..

“The speed of the jump, the movement of the character on screen, the timing of the actions in relation to a button press – these are a lot of things we spent a ton of time getting right in the beginning, before we even started working on the bosses or levels,” says Chad. “Cuphead comes from a lineage of games where the action is fast and the player’s input response is paramount. What the player presses on the controller happens immediately on screen.”

Cuphead will release on September 27 on PC and Xbox One.
