19 Year Old Gets Windows 95 To Run On A Browser

Windows95

Ah the 90s, the decade that brought us Surge,Tech Decks, and of course the Sega Saturn. Of course the 90s also brought us one of the most revolutionary operating systems known to man, Windows 95. Of course we now have Windows 10, but for those who wish to relive their nostalgia we have some news for you.

19-year old Andrea Faulds of Scotland managed to get the OS to run in JavaScript using an emulator known as Emscripten. Emscripten  simply complies C and C++ code into JavaScript. Faulds said…

“I installed Windows 95 in DOSBox using this guide from a virtualised CD, then packaged up the disk image, along with an AUTOEXEC.BAT file and a customdosbox.conf using Em-DOSBox. Really, all the hard work was done by the Emscripten, DOSBox and Em-DOSBox people. And, of course, the browser vendors and other people who have worked tirelessly to make the modern web platform what it is today. In the process of making this, I never once had to touch the DOSBox source code!”

Faulds also noted that it will not run as fast as if it were installed on your hard drive as it’s actually running an an emulated CPU. Faulds also said that since it runs entirely in memory, nothing can be saved.

It’s also worth noting that Faulds uses this for educational purposes only and that Windows 95 is still protected under copyright law.
